Events 2005 - Environ Silver Green Life Award
awarded to our Centre by Leicester City
Council
Silver Green Life Award- Leicester Central Centre, Region 4, SSSSO UK
The Leicester Central Sai Centre located in the middle of UK has been recognised with an Award for its positive contribution to the Environment by the local government, the Leicester City Council. The devotees of the centre, have participated in numerous environmental nation building projects in Leicestershire, for the past few years.
The City of Leicester became UK’s first “Environmental City” in 1990. This year the City has introduced Leicester Green Life Awards to recognise the environmental work of the people and organisations of Leicester
The Silver Award to the Sri Sathya Sai Centre was in the category of Environmental Contribution by a Community Group.
The environmental activities undertaken by the Centre in the past year include:-
* 23rd November 2003: 300 trees were planted on the orchards Nature Reserve.
* 18th April 2004: 10 tonnes of mill waste was laid on the path network at Watermead Ecology Park to prevent further path erosion.
* 27th June 2004: Post and rail fencing at Knighton Spinney Nature reserve was cleared, allowing the public a safer access to the reserve.
* 23rd November 2004: Gartree Nature Park, removing of old fencing and clearing up the area.
* February 2005: Buswells primary school, Beaumont Leys Leicester, where over 400 trees were planted.
The conservation officer stated, "The SSSSO has made a tremendous difference to three of our nature reserves".
The Centre has always combined Spiritual activities with Service activities, especially on Swami’s Birthday. The Birthday programme includes various service activities where devotees of all ages and abilities are given an opportunity to participate including environmental projects.
